The Artist
I don't know one
child who doesn't love to draw. Me, I wasn't only a
big fan of colors and images. I loved to construct and
create. It was something I was always thinking about and doing. All my school projects featured my own drawings
instead of clipped pictures. I drove my mother nuts,
using cardboard and shoe boxes to make houses for my dolls.
I almost broke her sewing machine trying to sew clothing for them.
I wanted to draw, design, and build so many things. I am not
sure how I kept it straight. I tell you, I
kept my mother out of scotch tape, glue and art supplies.
I really
started to figure out what I liked in Middle School.
That was when I attended Art Class and
Shop. Working with paints and the many machines were a
thrill for me. I learned some simple techniques with
paints and pencil. Simple yet effective and I have kept
those techniques with me through the years.
I
always wanted to be one of those artists that were able to
capture a person's image as if they were sitting before you.
When I started to learn about different
types of art, I decided I wanted to create something totally
my own. In my late teens I practiced with paints and
pencils. I made pillow cases and shirts for the
students on my Job Corps campus. I drew
cartoon characters, and painted them with clothing paint. The extra money came in handy. In my
early twenties I changed from cartoons to drawing people.
Usually I created these people in my mind and used pencil
and color pencil to
create and color
them. I drew pictures of my friends
and family. It was good practice. I developed a love for ink and
creating scenes of nature. I really enjoyed that until
I dropped ink on some of my work. I got so mad that
stopped using ink and changed back to pencil. Now I
dabble with ink sometimes. In
my mid twenties I decided that painting was something I
wanted to get into. I watched shows with a man named
Ross. I wanted to be like him. Except for the big red
afro he had on his head. At the time I couldn't afford
his kit but I bought a few paints and some canvases online
and started to create. Flowers and birds were my favorites. I
made quite a few for my mother. I wanted to learn how to make
texture with paint on canvas. Charcoal also captured me
because I loved the feeling of using it on paper and
smoothing it to create shadows. At the same time I was also
advancing with my Graphic art. Making Websites and
Graphics was something I had been working on for a few
years. Being self taught it was hard but I kept at it. As I advanced I started to create sites and pages
with artistic page sets. I offered them for free as
shareware to those who created personal sites.
In my
late twenties and now that I hit 30 I felt a need to make my
own type of art. Birds, backgrounds, flowers, etc lost
me. I wanted to create pretty, fun, meaningful
characters. So recently I have been creating what I call
"Mother Goddess". I have looked at many of the goddess
they have now that are draw, but not many look like full
figured Mother type of women. You would think a
Goddess would look like most women
having children and being a bit full and heavy. But in
this society it is a bad thing.
My art will celebrate all that is woman being full and joyous,
mysterious, sensual, casual and much more. I pick very
full abundant forms because Goddess have it all. Many times
they are spoiled and full of life. Why cant they have the
full round bodies to match? I am creating my own
meaningful full bodied characters. This is just a beginning
to my venture and I hope to create a whole series of "Mother
Goddess". Art is not how I make money (though web
design has brought me some well earned cash) it is another
form of expression. What I really have learned through
my art and over the years is that I didn't want to copy
another persons work. I didn't want to copy another
persons face. I want to create my own special work
that means something, even if only to me.
